snapshots of my life: week 41

our greenhouse
it is starting to take shape
the living room is almost debris-free
fall
a delicious apple cake from smitten kitchen
anatole being silly with his bff mikkel
heading to the park
it used to be enough to park butts on the swing, not anymore
cleaned house yesterday and found this tasty morsel: a severely dehydrated banana.  alan chopped it up and put it in some dark rum.  can this end well?  alan is optimistic.
the yard is all dug up to make way for new water pipes
we like to go walking at a lake called madam sø. every year around this time this sauna goes into action. people run or bike around the lake, take a dip, and then head for the sauna.
we soaked up some rays
CLIMB UP HERE, PAPA!!
this gives a new meaning to the word roots
lakeside selfie
anatole's teacher karina shared some pictures from various activities over the last two months
they made a play of goldilocks and the three bears
not sure what is happening here
the class gave each other massages. this is bastien, anatole's desk mate

from time to time anatole's class works on different projects with students from a third grade class

snapshots of my life: week 40

what the?  this kind of attention-getting billboard is undoubtedly trying to draw a young demographic (the company is a mobile phone provider). it's my hope that the tats are fake (at least the face, neck, and scalp drawings!).
the colors are shifting
i'm not sure i will ever fully grasp the danish obsession with hot dogs.  pulled meat on top of a hot dog? (2 are sold for the equivalent of $10)
anatole's wardrobe at school sandwiched nicely between his purple-wearing neighbors - he is notorious for stashing sticks and other nature paraphernalia
game time!
boring, run-of-the-mill meets "let's look down and appreciate cobble stone art work"
i ride down this street often and decided once and for all to stop and take in some serious stone work
this one is for my mom who has a fondness for fives
i made soup. first i roasted these amazing creatures - too pretty for words
post-roasted butternut squash.  look at those interesting dark, caramelly brown spots - captivating even after baking!
this is me being weird and experimental over my tea-leaf strewn sink. the hat? my hair was extra pouffy after a haircut and the hat was an effort to flatten it. it actually helped.
math homework. he decided to wear his 3-D glasses that he got at our summer viewing of how to train your dragon 3
homework is better with a snack (apple)
cartoon time with blankie draped over his knees
alan rented a jack hammer and removed two concrete staircases at our new house.  we are building a new, separate entrance. the old entrances will be reworked to look just like the rest of the house.
stones that were under one of the staircases
the second entry, now gone
we rented a dumpster to dispose of all the concrete
what's that saying?:  "it's going to get a lot worse before it gets better."  i get that.
my phone took this crooked panorama of the living room. you can sort of get the idea.
this tree is a comforting contrast to the what's going on inside the house.
a perfect spot for young climbers
tree texture
improvised workshop
my favorite 2 min banana bread: mash 3 v. ripe bananas w/ 2 eggs, 1/2 c sugar, 2T plain yogurt, 2T oil and a splash of vanilla. mix will look like cottage cheese. add 1 1/2c flour, 1t soda, and 1t salt.  mix and pour into a parchment lined pan. bake 350 C for 50 min.  (mini chocolate chips optional but highly recommended)
i was asked to participate in a photo shoot at my school. along with these other teachers, i will be featured in one of the school's promotional brochures.  they asked me to do it the same day of the photo shoot.  i was so happy i had clean hair and thought to put on a blazer that day!

snapshots of my life: week 39

anatole found a broken baby bird egg in the yard of the new house
close-up
anatole and i made these. the danes eat them in koldskål, a buttermilk based dessert. they taste like little round biscotti.
the first step is to roll the dough into a long rope from which small uniform pieces are cut and rolled into little balls. These are the balls after baking - the addition in the lower right corner is a snow man made by anatole
using a serrated bread knife, each little piece gets cut in two (slightly tedious)
the halves are then baked for a golden brown, crunchy finish
anatole will find any opportunity to get out the sprinkles
his masterpiece
a face only a mother could love. the picture does not do justice to the amount of flour that ended up all over him
i tried to take a picture of our sprinkle-covered floor but ended up with a rather clean looking surface: you had to be there
away with the sprinkles!
this is geometry + grass heaven
i get lost in this pattern, in a good way
parking lot sign at the school: turn off your engine - do not let it run for more than one minute.
bee house
one of my favorite spots - the best office building number ever
flowers still in bloom
our monkey
CHARRRGGGE!!!
tire swing selfie
we got photo bombed!
orange, version one...
orange II: already?  carved pumpkins at our local nursery. september 28 is too early, dear danes.
